Governors of the nineteen Northern states have renewed their collective resolve to confront prevailing security challenges and accelerate socio-economic transformation across the region.
A statement signed by DG press affairs Gombe State government house Ismaila Uba Misilli said the governors also threw their weight behind the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, while charting new pathways for institutional strengthening and economic expansion.
It said that this position was reached at the meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the Gombe State Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and read by Forum Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, the governors reaffirmed their support for the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to tackle evolving security threats.
They emphasized that peace and stability remain the cornerstone of development in Northern Nigeria and the country at large.
The Forum called on Nigerians to support the President, the armed forces and other security agencies in the collective task of safeguarding the nation.
The governors expressed satisfaction with the growing synergy among Northern states in addressing security and developmental challenges, noting that coordinated interventions are already yielding encouraging results across parts of the region.
They, however, stressed the need to sustain the momentum and scale up collaborative actions to consolidate on the gains achieved.
In a bid to reposition the Forum for greater effectiveness, the governors endorsed ongoing efforts to strengthen and restructure the NSGF into a more robust and result-driven institution.
They resolved to build a solid institutional framework that will enhance coordination among member states, ensure policy continuity, and improve the region’s capacity for strategic engagement.
As part of this reform agenda, the Forum threw its full support behind the digitization of the NSGF Secretariat, aimed at modernizing its operations and boosting efficiency in policy coordination and implementation.
On the economic front, the governors agreed to engage relevant experts to develop practical strategies for harnessing the region’s vast taxable revenue base, with a view to unlocking new streams of internally generated revenue and reducing fiscal constraints.
The meeting also focused on energy development, with the Forum reiterating its commitment to ongoing engagements with the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer on the establishment of the New Nigeria Energy Company (NNEC).
The governors pledged sustained collaboration to ensure the successful rollout of the Sun Africa Project, which is expected to enhance energy supply and drive industrial growth across Northern Nigeria.
The meeting concluded with a firm commitment by the governors to deepen cooperation, strengthen governance structures and pursue policies that will guarantee lasting peace, economic resilience and shared prosperity for the people of the region.
