The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has observed with concern the circulation of misinformation, unsubstantiated allegations, deliberate falsehoods and fabricated narratives concerning recent developments in the State.

A statement signed by the command public relations officer DSP Timfon John said the Command wishes to state unequivocally that it will not fold its arms and allow false or misleading information to be used to confuse members of the public, create unnecessary tension, incite hostility or threaten the peace and security being enjoyed across Akwa Ibom State.

Members of the public, political actors, commentators, social media users and content creators are strongly advised to verify information before publication or circulation and to refrain from presenting speculation, hearsay or deliberate fabrication as established fact.

The Command remains fully committed to the protection of the fundamental rights of all citizens, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. These rights must, however, be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law. Freedom of expression must not become a licence for deliberate falsehood, incitement, threats, intimidation or any conduct capable of provoking violence or disturbing public peace.

The Nigeria Police Force is a professional institution guided by the Constitution, applicable laws, established procedures and its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, prevent crime and maintain public order.

Accordingly, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command will continue to discharge its responsibilities fairly, firmly and impartially, without fear or favour, affection or ill will. No individual, group or political interest will receive preferential treatment, just as no person will be subjected to arbitrary action on the basis of sentiment, political affiliation or unfounded allegations.

Any person whose conduct constitutes an offence under the law will be investigated and dealt with strictly in accordance with due process, irrespective of status, affiliation or influence.

Members of the public must also appreciate that an issue does not have to go in one’s favour before it can be regarded as genuine, lawful or true. Public discourse should be guided by facts, objectivity and fairness rather than ethnicity, political affiliation, personal interest or preconceived bias.

Citizens are therefore encouraged to examine issues on their merits, consider the facts available and avoid conclusions driven by sentiment. A fair and peaceful society can only be sustained when people are willing to accept the truth even when it does not necessarily align with their expectations, interests or preferred position.

The Command therefore appeals to residents of Akwa Ibom State to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding and to rely on credible and official sources for accurate information concerning security developments in the State.

The cooperation of the public remains invaluable to the collective effort of sustaining the peace, security and stability of Akwa Ibom State.

Akwa Ibom State remains peaceful, and the Command remains resolute, professional and impartial in ensuring that it stays so.
