The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has described World Environment Day as very significant to the university.
A statement from the public affairs directorate office of the VC said Prof Ahmed spoke at the 2026 World Environment Day Symposium/Tree Planting, held on 21st July, 2026.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, explained that the theme of the symposium, “Inspired by Nature: Restoring ABU’s Ecosystem for Resilience, Adoption and Sustainable Microclimate”, was carefully chosen because of its strategic importance.
The university, according to him, was lucky to have all former Vice-Chancellors maintain the beauty of its environment.
He appreciated all invited guests and wished them journey mercies back to their respective destinations.
In a remark, Chairman of the occasion, Prof Aminu Ladan Sharehu, appreciated the University Management for inviting him to chair the historic event.
Prof Sharehu, who is also the Chairman of Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, commended ABU for maintaining the tradition.
In a keynote speech, Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS), Kaduna State Branch, Surv. Maikano Samson, stated that approximately 68% of the world’s population would reside in urban areas by 2050, with Africa expected to experience one of the fastest rates of urban growth.
According to Samson, Nigeria was already witnessing this transformation and that cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt continued to expand rapidly.
He said well-planned urbanization stimulates economic growth, promotes innovation, improves access to education and healthcare and creates opportunities for improved standards of living.
Samson emphasized that when urban expansion occurs without adequate planning, it places enormous pressure on land, infrastructure and natural ecosystems
The event was attended by stakeholders from within and outside Kaduna State.
