The first lady of Zaria local government area,Haj. Hauwa Yakub Ibrahim, has been recognised and decorated as one of the Kaduna State Nutrition Champions, alongside the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, Head of Service Mrs. Jummai C. Bako, and other distinguished women leaders.
In a statement signed by Abdullahi Abubakar lawal SA New Media to the chairman Zaria local government said she received the recognition on Tuesday at the 2026 Women in Power Conference, organised by the Kaduna State Planning and Budget Commission in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the Civil Society Scaling-Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN).
It said the recognition highlights the growing importance of women’s leadership in promoting nutrition, maternal and child health, food security and community wellbeing across Kaduna State.
According to the nutrition situation presented at the event, Kaduna State recorded an 8% reduction in malnutrition between 2018 and 2026. The state was also commended for having dedicated nutrition budget lines across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as all 23 Local Government Areas.
The ceremony brought together senior government officials, nutrition experts, women leaders, spouses of Local Government Chairmen and representatives of Persons Living with Disabilities, reflecting the importance of collective action in tackling malnutrition and improving the wellbeing of vulnerable communities.
For Zaria Local Government, the recognition of its First Lady as a Nutrition Champion represents an opportunity to further strengthen advocacy for healthy families, proper nutrition and the wellbeing of women and children.
Beyond the honour itself, nutrition advocacy is about turning awareness into meaningful action by encouraging families to prioritise balanced nutrition, supporting vulnerable groups and promoting healthier communities.
