The Governing Council of the Federal University Gashua (FUGA), Yobe, has approved the promotion of five academic staff to the rank of Professor and five others to the rank of Reader.

The council also approved the promotion of 159 other staff members across academic and non-teaching cadres.

The decisions were taken at the council’s 32nd Regular Meeting held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026.

The newly promoted professors are Dr Abatcha Melemi of the Department of Economics and Development Studies; Dr Kabiru Mohammed and Dr Aisha Ibrahim Ningi, both of the Department of History and International Studies; Dr Sunday Alewo Omale of the Department of Business Administration; and Dr Aina Babatunde of the Department of Mathematics.

Those promoted to the rank of Reader are Dr Sulaiman Alhaji Dauda, Department of Economics and Development Studies; Dr Anslem Rimau Bako, Department of Geography; Dr Wanan Cornelius Terzungwe, Department of Political Science; Dr Sanusi Saheed Olakunle, Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension; and Dr Uche Viola Obiana, Department of Home Science and Management.

According to a statement issued by Mallam Adamu Saleh, Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations of the university, the promotions followed favourable outcomes of external assessments.

The statement said the promotions to the ranks of Professor and Reader took effect from Oct. 1, 2025.

It added that the council also approved the promotion of Musa M. Musa Dagona from Principal Assistant Registrar to Deputy Registrar and Larama Mai Umar from Chief Accountant to Deputy Bursar.

The promotions, which followed favourable outcomes at their respective interviews, also took effect from Oct. 1, 2025.

The council further approved the promotion of 65 academic staff to various ranks and 68 senior administrative, technical and professional staff to various positions.

It also approved the advancement of 26 junior staff to senior positions, with the promotions taking effect from Oct. 1, 2026.

The statement said the promotions underscored the university’s commitment to recognising academic excellence, research contributions, effective teaching, professional competence and dedicated service.

It said the development was expected to strengthen the institution’s workforce and support its pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and community service.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, on behalf of the management, congratulated the promoted staff, particularly the professors and readers.

He wished them continued success in their academic and professional careers.

Council extends tenure of three principal officers

The governing council also approved a one-year extension of the tenure of three principal officers of the university.

They are the Registrar, Dr Abubakar Mamuda; Bursar, Muhammad Ahmad Ali; and University Librarian, Dr Adam Gambo Saleh.

The statement said the extension was in accordance with Section 5(4) of the Federal University Gashua Act.

It explained that the provision empowered the council, upon satisfactory performance, to extend the tenure of a Registrar, Bursar or Librarian for a further period of one year only.

According to the statement, after the additional one-year period, the affected officer is required to relinquish the position and be assigned other duties within the university.

The council said the decisions were aimed at strengthening the university’s administrative and academic structures, promoting career progression and enhancing institutional efficiency.
