As part of his familiarization tour to formations and units under command, which is aimed at assessing troops readiness, operational effectiveness, and enhancing collaboration with other security agencies and key stakeholders, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South) Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Everest Okoro, visited Headquarters 63 Brigade and it’s areas of responsibilities (AOR).
A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Umar Adam, Acting Deputy Director 6 Division Nigerian Army Public Relations said during the visit, which commenced from 10 – 16 August 2026, at the Headquarters 63 Brigade Nigerian Army, Asaba Delta State, the Commander 63 Brigade and Sector 1, Joint Task Force (South-South) Operation DELTA SAFE, Brigadier General Ibrahim Buhari, briefed the GOC on the Brigade’s operational activities, administrative matters, logistics, achievements, challenges and projections. At the end of the brief, the GOC inspected ongoing projects within the Brigade’s Headquarters, and conducted an on the spot assessment of the Brigade’s permanent site at Ibusa Delta State. The GOC also visited 181 Amphibious Battalion, Agbor, Headquarters 246 Recce Battalion Oleh, Headquarters 3 Battalion Effurun and 90 Amphibious Battalion Okoko Delta State.
While addressing troops at various units and locations within the Brigade’s AOR, Major General Okoro, urged them to remain vigilant, responsive, disciplined, politically neutral and professional in the discharge of their duties . The GOC stressed on the importance of protecting critical national assets and maintaining peace and security in the Niger Delta Region, while reminding troops to uphold law, respect citizens right, and demonstrate integrity and restraint. Therefore, he charged the troops to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and conduct themselves in a manner that will promote public confidence and reflects the honour and professionalism of the military.
The GOC also urged the troops to sustain effective collaboration with other security agencies and key stakeholders, which is relevant for intelligence gathering and critical for achieving the mandate of the operation, he said. The GOC further stated that it can build trust and serve as a source for generating timely and relevant information on development within their areas of responsibility. Therefore, he charged them to respect local communities and strengthen communication with them, as part of the effort to promote security, protect critical national assets, and sustain peace in the Niger Delta Region.
As part of the familiar ization tour, the GOC paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with 6 Division Nigerian Army towards enhancing security and safeguarding national assets domiciled in the state. Demonstrating the critical role of traditional leaders in peace building, Major General Okoro also visited His Royal Majesty, the Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Chigbo Azinge, Major General Felix Mujakperuo (RTD) CFR, the Orodge 1 of Okpe Kingdom, the Olu of Warri, His Royal Majesty Ogaime Atuwatse III, and His Royal Majesty Barrister Shedrack Peremobowei Erubulu Aduo lll, the Pere of Kabowei Kingdom Delta and Bayelsa States.
During his engagement with the traditional rulers, the GOC described traditional institutions as important stakeholders in the promotion of peace and security, as well as custodians of culture and heritage. Therefore, the GOC sought their continued partnership and support in addressing security challenges across the Niger Delta Region and assured them of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to providing the necessary security support to sustain peace in the region.
Similarly, the GOC visited the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta in Warri, Delta State, where he called for strengthened inter-service collaboration to enhance the protection of the nation’s maritime domain and critical national infrastructures. He commended the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, for the existing cooperation with 63 Brigade in safeguarding national assets in the state and assured the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies of the readiness of 6 Division to provide the necessary support within its mandate. In his response, Commodore Tasiu congratulated Major General Okoro on his appointment and reaffirmed the readiness of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta to sustain the collaboration with 6 Division Nigerian Army, noting that effective maritime security requires cooperation among the various security agencies.
