Major General John Lar has assumed command as the new Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, with a pledge to sustain operational excellence and intensify security efforts in the Federal Capital Territory.

A statement signed by Bashir Muhammad Jajira Acting Deputy Director, Army Headquarters Garrison Public Relations said Major General John Lar took over command from Major General Maxwell Dangana on 15 July 2026 at AHQ Garrison, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro Abuja, as part of the Nigerian Army’s routine posting and command succession process.

In his farewell address, Major General Dangana expressed profound appreciation to officers and soldiers of Army Headquarters Garrison for their loyalty, professionalism and unwavering support during his tenure. He commended the principal staff officers and direct reporting officers for their dedication and tireless efforts in the successful execution of the Garrison’s responsibilities.

He urged personnel to remain vigilant and accord maximum attention to the security of Abuja, describing it as a critical responsibility of AHQ Garrison. He also appealed to all personnel to extend greater cooperation to the incoming commander.

Addressing the troops, the incoming Commander, Major General John Lar expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) for the appointment and described his predecessor as an accomplished commander whose remarkable achievements had set a high standard for the Garrison.

He noted that the successes recorded under Major General Dangana were the result of collective efforts and appealed to officers and soldiers to extend the same level of cooperation and commitment to him. This, he said, would enable the Garrison to sustain its operational effectiveness and continue delivering on its constitutional responsibilities.

Major General Lar assured personnel of an open and professional leadership style anchored on diligence, discipline, and accountability. He urged personnel to remain diligent and professional in the discharge of their duties.

He further emphasized the strategic importance of Abuja and the Garrison’s Area of Operational Interest, noting that the security of the Federal Capital Territory remains highly sensitive and demands unwavering vigilance. He charged troops to intensify efforts to deny criminal elements freedom of action within the Garrison’s area through proactive operations and sustained commitment to duty.

Highlights of the event included an operational brief on the AHQ Garrison Area of Responsibility, signing of handing and taking over notes, decoration of the new Commander with the AHQ Garrison Insignia, a Quarter Guard ceremony and group photographs with officers and soldiers.
