The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South) Operation DELTA SAFE Major General Everest Okoro, has stated that family support plays a crucial role in the career and professional responsibilities of military personnel.
A statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Umar Adam Acting Deputy Director 6 Division Nigerian Army Public Relations said the GOC made this statement on 18 August 2026 when he received the Chairperson, Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 6 Division Chapter, Engineer Mrs Jane Mma Okoro, and other members of the association, who paid a courtesy visit to Headquarters 6 Division Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers State.
Major General Okoro noted that military spouses constitute a significant source of support to personnel, particularly in maintaining the home front while their spouses are engaged in military duties. He stated that the responsibilities undertaken by military spouses contribute to the ability of personnel to remain focused on their assigned duties.
He further noted that military spouses often undertake a substantial proportion of family responsibilities due to the nature of military service and the frequent absence of personnel from their families. While commending their commitment and sacrifices, the GOC assured the Chairperson of his support and commitment towards the welfare of troops and the entire barracks community.
Earlier, the Chairperson, NAOWA 6 Division Chapter, Engineer Mrs Jane Mma Okoro, congratulated the GOC on his appointment as the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army. She stated that the visit was aimed at familiarising the association with the Headquarters 6 Division and establishing a working relationship with the new leadership of the Division.
She further explained that the association also sought the support of the GOC for its activities, particularly those relating to the welfare of military families. According to her, the association focuses on programmes and initiatives that support the wellbeing of personnel and their families within the Division and its area of responsibility. Mrs Okoro added that NAOWA 6 Division Chapter would continue to engage the leadership of the Division on matters concerning the welfare of military families and personnel. The visit featured the signing of visitors’ book, presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph to mark the occasion.
